Speak Up Film Festival to promote gender equality

“Speak Up Film Festival,” one of the programs of 2015 Women of Kaohsiung to echo International Women’s Day, will be open from March 20 through 29. The festival is arranged by the senior curator Vita Lin and 8 undergraduate students of the Department of Cultural and Creative Industries of National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences. They picked up six films to convey the notion of gender equality and to promote social status of women.

The Social Affairs Bureau of Kaohsiung City government revealed that the United Nations has published the Millennium Development Goals and Beyond 2015, which indicated that there would be a society of gender equality in the future.

The festival, organized mostly by students, highlights gender awareness and sexual equality, featuring six films including “The Finishers,” “Intouchables,” “Ocean Heaven,” and so on. The films also touches the issue of the booming male caregivers in home care industry and discusses the care issues between husband and wife, children and parent.

Breaking gender disparity is one way to advance rights of women. Yao Yu-Ching, head of the Social Affairs Bureau of Kaohsiung, said that she was touched by the films and hoped that through the festival, the public can understand the hardship of the caregivers and achieve the gender equality in our society.

“Speak Up Film Festival” will be open from March 20 through 29, shown at the Women, Children and Youth Center, Center of Women of Kaohsiung City, and TaKaoBooks. The organizers invited male caregivers and experts to attend the seminars after each film.
