Taiwan shares end up, boosted by electronics, financial stocks

Taipei, March 18 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan closed higher Wednesday, prompted by the bellwether electronics sector and financial stocks, which gained ground during the trading session. The weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) closed up 113.99 points, or 1.19 percent, at 9,653.43 on turnover of NT$104.77 billion (US$3.32 billion). The bourse opened at 9,563.09 points and fluctuated between 9,561.5 and 9,653.43 before closing at the day's high, breaking the monthly average of 9,570. Researchers at KGI Futures said the boost surprised the market and ended gloom that had hovered over the market for several days. The electronics sub-index increased 1.3 percent, while a 1.1 percent growth was recorded in the financial sector. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC, ???), the most heavily weighted stock in the market, rose 3 percent to close at NT$153.5, while IC design firm MediaTek (???) grew 1.2 percent to NT$435.5. Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.(??), the world's biggest contract electronics makers, posted a rise of 0.6 percent, closing at NT$87.9. In the financial sector, Cathay Financial Holding Co. (???) grew 0.3 percent to close at NT$48.2, Fubon Financial Holding Co. (???) surged 2.6 percent to NT$58, CTBC Financial Holding Co. (???) added 0.7 percent to NT$20.8 and Mega Financial Holding Co. (???) gained 2.4 percent to NT$25.65. Foreign institutional investors (including those from China) purchased shares worth a combined total of NT$10.53 billion. (By Jalen Chung and Elizabeth Hsu)
