U.S., Taiwan to set up training center to combat Ebola spread

Taipei, March 17 (CNA) The United States and Taiwan is to co-launch a training center in the southern city of Tainan in an effort to cultivate more medical personnel in the Asia-Pacific region to combat the Ebola virus, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday. As part of a U.S-Taiwan cooperation effort on the fight against Ebola, the center will open Wednesday, said Kelly Hsieh (???), director-general of the ministry's Department of North American Affairs, at a regular news briefing. The program will take place at a disease control and prevention facility in Tainan, he said, adding that the U.S. has already trained some Taiwanese personnel to be seed instructors for the program. The program will include a total of 18 trainees and instructors, from countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, Hsieh said. The program is aimed at training more medical staff in the Asia- Pacific region to help them combat the Ebola virus, a disease that has caused about 10,000 deaths in West Africa, he said.
