Penghu military police raise money for treatment of sick dog

Taipei, March 15 (CNA) A group of military police in the offshore county of Penghu has raised more than NT$20,000 (US$630) to pay for the veterinary care of a sick dog. The dog, Pan Tang (??) or Half Sugar, is a former stray that was raised by the military police at an air defense radar station in Penghu, said Yeh Huan-ching (???), a member of the 9th Squadron. Yeh said Pan Tang began losing his appetite last year and was found to have contracted heartworms, a deadly canine condition. To obtain proper treatment, the dog had to be taken to a veterinary hospital in Kaohsiung, which was a costly undertaking, said Yeh, who flew with Pang Tang to the south Taiwan city. Yeh said he and other military police at the base launched a fundraising drive and collected over NT$20,000 (US$630) to help pay for the dog's air travel and veterinary care. When Pan Tang was leaving the base, the entire 9th Squadron turned out in full uniform to bid him farewell and wish him a glorious "retirement," said Ni Ching-tai (???), a volunteer from the Animal Rescue Team Taiwan, which helped in the effort to obtain treatment for the dog.
