Honduras' new ambassador seeking to advance bilateral trade

Taipei, March 14 (CNA) Honduras' new ambassador to Taiwan said his top priorities after assuming the post are to seek more Taiwanese investment in his country and to expand the presence of Honduran products in Taiwan's market. "The first thing I will do is to look for Taiwanese companies that are interested in investing in Honduras," said Rafael Fernando Sierra Quesada, who assumed his new post as the ambassador earlier this year. "This will help create more job opportunities in Honduras," he told the media during a press event earlier this week. Taiwanese companies can also use Honduras as a gateway to the United States, as well as South American and other Central American countries, he said, adding that Honduras is a good place to invest in such areas of solar energy and coffee. "We have an FTA (free trade agreement) with Taiwan. And we have to take advantage of that," Sierra, 38, added. The Honduran government has also moved to pass regulations aimed at attracting more foreign investment, he said. Meanwhile, Sierra said that he is trying to expand the presence of Honduran products in the Taiwanese market by helping to export melons to Taiwan and expand coffee exports. A growing presence of Honduran products will also help promote the image of Honduras and could be a good way to spark Taiwanese people's interest in visiting Honduras for tourism, he said. Honduras boasts a variety of attractions, including beautiful beaches, Mayan ruins and colonial towns. Appointed by President Juan Orlando Hernandez, Sierra arrived in Taiwan in late January to take up his post. Describing Taiwan as an important partner, he said he will make efforts to strengthen the ties between the two countries. Honduras is one of Taiwan's 22 diplomatic allies. (By Elaine Hou)
