Taiwan fetes foreign envoys at annual spring banquet

Taipei, March 12 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted its annual spring banquet for foreign ambassadors and representatives posted in Taiwan on Thursday, thanking them for their efforts to help expand the nation's international presence. The banquet -- held after the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday -- was attended by ambassadors from Taiwan's diplomatic allies as well as representatives from countries that do not have official ties with the nation, such as Japan, the United States and many others. President Ma Ying-jeou (???) thanked the diplomatic allies for their support and speaking up on Taiwan's behalf at international events such as sessions of the United Nations General Assembly. Ma also said that although Taiwan has been working to improve ties with China, it remains committed to advancing its relations with other countries. Meanwhile, the president said that his administration will continue its efforts to establish Taiwan as a regional peacemaker, having sought peaceful solutions to fishing disputes with the Philippines and Japan. Foreign Minister David Lin (???) praised improving relations between Taiwan and the countries represented by the guests at the banquet. Over the past year, Taiwan has signed more than 20 trade-related agreements and memorandums of understanding with trading partners which will bolster the nation's bid to join the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, Lin said. Lin also reiterated Taiwan's efforts to serve as a provider of international humanitarian aid, citing the nation's contribution to ongoing international work to combat the Ebola virus. Ludwig Dowong Keke, Nauru's ambassador to Taiwan and head of the diplomatic corps, lauded Taiwan's efforts to foster its economic growth and promote peace in the region. He offered assurances that Taiwan's allies will continue to support the nation and redouble their efforts to expand its international presence. The foreign envoys were treated to performances by the O-Kai singers and Team-Win Lion Dance Theatre, among other Taiwanese performing groups. Taiwanese diplomats and several foreign diplomats later took to the stage to give a drumming performance and a rendition of the classic Taiwanese song "The Moon Represents My Heart" (???????). Levente Szekely, Hungary's representative to Taiwan, played violin with the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra. (By Elaine Hou)
