The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 35.27 points, or 1.7 percent, to 2,044.16.

The Nasdaq composite fell 82.64 points, or 1.7 percent, to 4,859.79.

For the week:

The Dow is down 193.84 points, or 1.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 27.10 points, or 1.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 67.58 points, or 1.4 percent.

For the year:
