NEW YORK (AP) -- The funeral for Cardinal Edward Egan has begun with a procession from the streets of midtown Manhattan into St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Drummers and bagpipers from New York's police and fire departments played as a long line of clergy and others made their way to the cathedral's main entrance.

Egan, who led the area's Roman Catholics for almost a decade, is to be remembered during a music-filled funeral Mass celebrated by his successor, Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

Among the expected guests were Gov. Andrew Cuomo and four mayors: incumbent Bill De Blasio and former mayors Michael Bloomberg, Rudy Giuliani and David Dinkins.

Participants listed on the Mass program include international opera star Renee Fleming, who sang at Egan's 2000 installation.

Egan, 82, died March 5 after a heart attack.
