Senators push Obama to arm Ukraine, lament slowness of aid

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Both Democratic and Republican U.S. senators are asking why the Obama administration hasn't decided whether to send defensive weapons to Ukraine in the face of Russian violations of cease-fire agreements in Ukraine, .

Victoria Nuland, assistant secretary of state, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday that administration officials are still discussing lethal assistance and are watching to see whether the so-called Minsk agreements -- which led to last month's cease-fire -- are implemented. At the same time, she said that in the past few days, there have been new transfers of Russian tanks, armored vehicles, heavy artillery and rocket equipment over the border to separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Republican Committee Chairman Sen. Bob Corker suggested the indecision on providing lethal weapons to Ukrainian forces has hurt U.S. credibility abroad.
