University student arrested on suspicion of killing schoolmate

Taipei, March 10 (CNA) A university student has been arrested on suspicion of murder after he was found trying to burn the body of a schoolmate in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, local police authorities reported Tuesday. The 25-year-old Huang Chung-yiu (???) is suspected of strangling to death the 18-year-old girl at his residence in Tainan before carrying her body by scooter to a site near a temple in a mountainous area of Chaishan, Kaohsiung, where he attempted to destroy the evidence by spraying her body with gasoline and setting her on fire, according to the police. Huang reportedly made the acquaintance of the girl, identified by her surname Chu (?), at the university they both attended. He claimed that the girl came to his residence in Tainan Monday where she tried to vent her grievances by complaining about a breakup with her boyfriend. Huang tried to seek sexual pleasure with her but was turned down. He then throttled her to death and transported her body to the moutainous area, the police said. However, black plumes of smoke billowing from the site attracted the attention of local residents who called in fire fighters. According to the police, Huang studied at a science and technology university in Kaohsiung before being dismissed from the university and transferring to a university in Tainan. Since Huang's confession was repeatedly inconsistent and he failed to provide a motive for the murder, investigators and police went to his residence overnight as part of their investigation. When Huang was taken back to the scene of the crime Tuesday, he repeadedly expressed remorse over Chu's death. (By Chen Ja-fo, Wang Shwu-fen and Evelyn Kao)
