HTC's share of U.S. market dips to 3.8%

Taipei, March 9 (CNA) HTC Corp.'s (???) share of the United States smartphone market continued to fall in the three months ending in January amid mounting competition from Apple Inc. and South Korean phone makers. The Taoyuan-based company remained the fifth-largest smartphone vendor in the U.S. with a 3.8 percent share between November and January, dropping 0.3 percentage points from the August-October period, according to a report published last week by market research firm comScore Inc. Apple led the U.S. market but its share dropped by 0.6 percentage points to 41.3 percent in the three months ending in January, while second-ranked Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea maintained its share at 29.3 percent. LG Electronics Inc. was a distant third, with its market share expanding by 0.6 percentage points to 8.0 percent, followed by Motorola Mobility in fourth place with a 5.2 percent share, comScore said. In the three-month period, 184 million U.S. residents over the age of 13 owned smartphones, making up 75.8 percent of all mobile phone subscribers in the country, the research company said.
