Taipei mayor angers gender rights activists

Taipei, March 7 (CNA) Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (???) drew protests from gender rights activists Saturday after he used the word "import" in reference to foreign spouses married to Taiwanese men. He made the controversial remark when he was addressing a forum on gender issues held by the city government. "Aren't there 300,000 foreign brides being imported to Taiwan? How come?" he said in expression of his surprise at the fact that there are more single men than single women in Taiwan. The word "import" immediately caused an uproar among his audience. After the forum was concluded, some of the participants chased after Ko and questioned: "Are foreign brides imported?" Ko did not answer the question and left the venue. (By Liu Shih-yi and Y.F.
