MOFA in search for Taiwanese fishing boat missing off Argentina

Taipei, March 7 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Saturday that it has been helping with efforts to search for a Taiwanese fishing boat reported missing Feb. 26 with a crew of 49. The boat lost contact in waters off southeastern Argentina and it was carrying two Taiwanese, 11 Chinese, 13 Filipino, 21 Indonesian and two Vietnamese crew members, the ministry said. Upon receiving a report from Taiwan's Fisheries Agency and the National Rescue Command Center Feb. 26, the ministry said it immediately asked its representative office in Argentina to seek help from the Argentina Navy to look for the boat. The ministry said Taiwan's representative office in the United Kingdom has also contacted the British authorities and the European Union Naval Force for help. The boat, however, remained missing. The ministry said the Argentina rescue center will continue to ask boats operating near the area to help search for the Taiwanese boat. Meanwhile, Taiwan's representative offices in Argentina and the U.K. will continue to keep in close contact with the local authorities and will try every possible means to locate the boat, the ministry said. The U.K. maintains sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and South Georgia in the South Atlantic close to Argentina. (By Elaine Hou)
