Taipei-Shanghai Forum will continue: Taipei mayor

Taipei, March 7 (CNA) Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (???) expressed confidence Saturday that Taipei and Shanghai will hold their twin-city forum this year. Ko said he has exchanged letters with Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong (??) and that both sides have shown the intention to continue the Taipei-Shanghai Forum, although further discussion will be needed on related details. He proposed that the two sides continue to move ties forward based on the principles of mutual trust, understanding, respect and cooperation. The Taipei-Shanghai Forum was launched in 2010 during the tenure of former Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (???) of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT). Since the independent Ko took over the post in December, there has been speculation that the forum might be suspended because Ko refuses to accept the "1992 consensus" -- referred to by the KMT as a cross-Taiwan Strait understanding on "one China," with each side free to interpret what that means. Commenting on the issue in Beijing Friday, Yang said that Shanghai and Taipei have previously cooperated on the basis of the "1992 consensus" and that he hopes to continue working with all sectors in Taiwan to promote cross-strait peace on the basis of the consensus. Yang did not respond directly to the question of whether the Taipei-Shanghai forum will continue. (By Huang Li-yun and Y.F. Low)
