Taiwan taps trade opportunities at Foodex Japan

Taipei, March 6 (CNA) The Taiwan pavilion at the 40th International Food and Beverage Exhibition in Tokyo, also called Foodex Japan 2015, drew some 2,400 buyers, with trade opportunities valued US$61.79 million, during the four-day show that ended on Friday, according a trade promoter. Foodex Japan is the largest trade show of agricultural and processed food products in Asia, and a must-visited event by buyers from regional countries and areas, including Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong, the non-profit, government-sponsored Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said. This year, the local governments of five agricultural counties and municipal cities in Taiwan -- Kaohsiung, Tainan, Chiayi, Yunlin and Pingtung -- presented premium farming and fishery products, including fresh fruits and honey, at the Taiwan Pavilion under the auspice of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. TAITRA was tasked with establishing the national exhibition pavilion. It said Taiwanese egg producers from Pingtung received orders from a chain supermarket operator in Osaka, Japan on the opening day of the annual exhibition on March 3. Also, the Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Inc., which attended the Foodex Japan for the first time, praised the trade show as having brought the company more trade opportunities than it had expected, TAITRA said. During the show, the company established cooperative links with many Japanese trading companies that supply Chinese food restaurants and bars with alcoholic beverages, the kaoliang distiller was cited by TAITRA as saying. Kinmen kaoliang, the most well-known Taiwanese spirit, is a strong distilled liquor made from fermented sorghum. Statistics from the Council of Agriculture meanwhile show that Taiwan exported NT$160 billion (US$5.09 billion) worth of agricultural products overseas last year, with one sixth of the exports shipped to Japan.
