Defense Ministry mum on chief of general staff's U.S. visit

Taipei, March 5 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) declined Thursday to comment on a local media report on an on-going visit by Chief of the General Staff Gen. Yen De-fa (???) to the United States to promote bilateral military exchanges. "We will not comment," ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Luo Shou-he (???) said when asked to confirm the report. The ministry does not make public comments on the specifics of military exchanges between Taiwan and the U.S., he added. Taiwan and the U.S. have maintained good interactions in recent years, based on strong mutual trust, a military source said. The Chinese-language Liberty Times, citing sources in Washington, reported that Yen arrived in Washington, D.C. last weekend to meet with senior U.S. defense officials. The newspaper said that Yen is the second Taiwanese chief of the general staff to have visited the U.S. in six years. The last one was Lin Chen-yi (???). Following his trip to Washington, which the paper said ended Wednesday, Yen was scheduled to visit the Luke Air Force Base to meet Taiwanese pilots being trained there, the report said. He will later visit the U.S Pacific Command in Hawaii, it added. Yen, a former Army commander, took over as chief of the general staff in a January personnel reshuffle. (By Elaine Hou)
