PERTH, Australia (AP) -- Opener David Warner smashed a career-best 178 runs and shared a record 260 runs with Steve Smith (95) to propel Australia to a record 417-6 after being asked to bat by Afghanistan in a World Cup Pool A match at the WACA ground on Wednesday.
The pair bettered the 252 runs between Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson for any wicket for Australia against England at Centurion in South Africa in 2009.
Warner smashed 5 sixes and 19 fours off 132 balls. Smith's runs came off 98 balls.
Glenn Maxwell hit an entertaining 88 runs off 39 balls with seven sixes and six fours.
