Evergreen Marine to expand services in Southeast Asia

Taipei, March 4 (CNA) Evergreen Marine Corp., Taiwan's largest shipping firm, said Wednesday that it will expand its services in Southeast Asia in a bid to tap rising demand in the region. On March 19, Evergreen Marine will launch a route that will begin from Kaohsiung and stop over in Hong Kong, China's Shekou, and Port Kelang and Penang in Malaysia before returning to Port Kelang, the shipper said. The route will then continue to Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas of Malaysia and head back to Kaohsiung to wrap up the trip, the shipper added. Evergreen Marine will assign three 1,600 20-foot-equivalent unit (TEU) vessels to serve the weekly route, which will take 21 days to complete. Evergreen Marine said the new services are aimed at increasing cargo deliveries for its customers using ports such as Shekou, Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas, which serve as part of the shipper's already broad international network, either operated on its own or through joint services with its partners. The new route is expected to take advantage of booming trade activity in the region as well as in the global market, Evergreen Marine said. In addition, Evergreen Marine said it will use one 1,200 TEU vessel to serve another new route that will have a voyage rotation of Taichung, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong and Taichung. The first voyage will start from Hong Kong March 25, the shipper said. The shipper will provide one journey a week on the new Taiwan-Hong Kong route, which is expected to take seven days. Evergreen Marine said the new service is expected to further enhance connections with the shipper's global shipping network, of which Hong Kong is part. With the new route in place, Evergreen Marine will be able to carry more cargo directly from Taiwan to Hong Kong. (By Wei Shu and Frances Huang)
