ITRI spins off cloud computing unit (update)

Taipei, March 4 (CNA) Taiwan's state-funded Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI, ???) announced Wednesday that it is spinning off its Gemini cloud OS research team into a company that will use all-encompassing virtualization and integrated cloud technology. The new company, Gemini Open Cloud Computing Inc. (?????????), will provide a "one-stop shop" for resources in virtualization in computing, storage and networking. That will enable enterprises to put their applications on Gemini Open Cloud's cloud platform while saving over 50 percent on manpower and operational costs, ITRI said in a statement. The Gemini Open Cloud platform has already been in commercial operation at National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu City Police Bureau, New Taipei City Police Department as well as the National Development Council's e-government service website, according to ITRI. "We're confident of the sustained growth of the private cloud market. Our cloud product can enable enterprises to easily move their current applications to the cloud and provide cloud services anytime, anywhere, using any devices," Patrick Fu, CEO of Gemini Open Cloud, said at a press conference to announce the spin-off. In the coming year, Fu said, Gemini Open Cloud will foster cooperation between domestic and overseas partners in developing cloud applications in different domains. With capital of NT$200 million (US$6.38 million), Gemini Open Cloud has started shipping its products to 10 Taiwanese enterprise clients and is negotiating a dealership with a distributor in the United States, he said. To build a cloud ecosystem with the local manufacturing industry, Gemini Open Cloud has teamed up with six software developers and eight hardware manufacturers, including Wistron Corp. (??), Inventec Corp. (???), Acer Inc. (??) and MiTAC International Corp. (??), Fu added. (By Jeffrey Wu)
