Aerotropolis chief denies tax evasion

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taoyuan Aerotropolis Chairman Cheng Pao-ching on Tuesday denied allegations he had been barred from leaving the country because he owed NT$40 million (US$1.27 million) in back taxes.
Cheng, a former Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker, was recently appointed to head the prestigious project, which is to expand the capabilities of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
Kuomintang members of the Taoyuan City Council told Mayor Cheng Wen-tsang, also DPP but no relation of the chairman, that it would be difficult for the official to travel overseas and recruit investment for the Aerotropolis project if he was barred from leaving the country.
The mayor said he would look into the allegations and if they were found to be true, the city government would replace the chairman.
After contacting Cheng, the city later showed travel documents apparently proving that the Aerotropolis chief had visited Thailand last July and China last October on a commercial trip.
The businessman himself said that he did not owe any back taxes. If he had, his wage and his assets would have been confiscated, his real estate would have been sold at auction and he would not have been allowed to leave the country on those occasions, he said.
Cheng said he was not blaming the city councilors for making the accusations, but the person or persons who had fed them erroneous information. The stories about tax evasion and restriction of his movement were based on total nonsense, the Aerotropolis chief reportedly said.
The Taoyuan project has been put under investigation by the new DPP city government which took office last December. One of the key officials involved in the project was Yeh Shih-wen, a former Taoyuan vice mayor who was later indicted for corrupt dealings with the Farglory Group on other projects. The case cast doubt on the nature of his involvement in the Taoyuan Aerotropolis.
