Consumer confidence hits new high in February

Taipei, March 2 (CNA) Consumer confidence in Taiwan reached a record high level in February thanks to a stronger outlook on job opportunities and the local economy, according to the results of a survey by National Central University released Monday. The consumer confidence index rose 1.21 points from a month earlier to 89.44, hitting a new record high, according to the survey. Five of the six sub-indexes on which the survey was based showed improvement, including confidence in the employment situation, the local business climate, consumer prices, family finances and the timing for investing in the equity market. The sub-index that showed the highest gain was the timing for investing in the equity market, which rose for the fourth straight month to reach 97.3. Confidence level in the employment situation rose slightly to 114, its highest level ever recorded, while confidence in prices edged up to 50.65, the highest since June 2012. The only sub-index that fell last month was the timing for buying durable goods, dropping 0.5 points to 106.3. However, the index has nonetheless remained above 100 points for 17 consecutive months, indicating an optimistic outlook. (By Chen Cheng-wei and Scully Hsiao)
