MOSCOW (AP) -- Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has requested to be released early from prison so he can attend the funeral of slain opposition politician Boris Nemtsov.
Navalny's spokeswoman told The Associated Press that lawyers had filed a request for early release to attend the funeral Tuesday. Navalny was sentenced on Feb. 20 to 15 days in custody for handing out leaflets for an upcoming protest.
Nemtsov was gunned down not far from the Kremlin on Friday in what many in the opposition believe was reprisal for his unrelenting criticism of President Vladimir Putin. No suspects have yet been detained in connection with the killing.
