Kerry primed for vigorous defense of Israel at UN human rights panel despite rift over Iran

Kerry set to defend Israel before UN rights panel

GENEVA (AP) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Geneva where he is to deliver a vigorous defense of Israel before a U.N. body that Washington deems biased against the Jewish state.

Even as the U.S.-Israel rift over a possible Iran nuclear deal was expected to grow with a series of speeches in Washington this week, Kerry was to take the U.N. Human Rights Council to task on Monday for unfair treatment of Israel and demand a more balanced approach.

Kerry said Sunday that despite the split on Iran, the Obama administration is committed to Israel's defense. He noted the administration has intervened to protect Israel from condemnation at the United Nations and other international forums several hundred times in the last two years.
