Brisk domestic travel during Lunar New Year holiday

Taipei, Feb. 27 (CNA) The number of people who traveled domestically during the just-ended Lunar New Year holiday hit 8.76 million and generated nearly NT$11.4 billion (US$362 million) in revenue, the Tourism Bureau said Friday. Thanks to relatively mild weather, travel was popular, with northern Taiwan attracting the largest number of tourists at 3.13 million -- 36 percent of the total, the bureau said. This was followed by 2.4 million visitors, or 27.3 percent, in southern Taiwan and 2.36 million, or 26.95 percent of the total, in central Taiwan, it said. The Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area in northern Taiwan, which consists of Lion Head Mountain in Miaoli County, Lishan in Taichung and Baguashan in Changhua County, was the top tourist destination during the Feb. 18-23 holiday. Suburban metropolitan areas such as Tamsui in New Taipei and Lotus Pond in Kaohsiung were also popular. The brisk domestic travel had its downside, though, with some 120 tourists in a central Taiwan tourist spot contracting norovirus Feb. 23. Both tourists and staff of the Hoya Resort Hotel Wuling in the Wuling Farm area reported norovirus symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and fever, according to the Taichung City Health Bureau. To prevent another outbreak during the ongoing 228 Memorial Day weekend, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Friday that it had sent personnel to be on standby at the hotel.
