YouBike down for hours in northern and central Taiwan

Taipei, Feb. 27 (CNA) Public bike rental system YouBike went down on Friday starting at 10:30 a.m. because of heavy online traffic, and had yet to be repaired as of late Friday afternoon.
YouBike systems in Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung and Changhua were still down as of 3:30 p.m., and the company said its engineers were working with telecommunications service providers to fix the problem. Users were able to return their rented bikes but could not check out bikes. YouBike spokesperson Liu Li-chu (???) attributed the problem to a huge volume of traffic on the Internet that began overwhelming the YouBike system at about 10 a.m.
Soon after the system went down, the company's management urged users to take other forms of transportation to get to their destinations. The large-scale breakdown of the system was unprecedented in the history of the public bike rental system, which was formally launched in Taipei in November of 2012. Liu said it was not possible to estimate how many users were affected by the problem because of the way the system is designed. (By Chang Ming-kun, Huang Li-yun and Kuo Chung-han)
