Chances of ISIS attack in Taiwan 'very low': legislator

Taipei, Feb. 26 (CNA) Ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Lin Yu-fang (???) on Thursday urged the public not to panic over an alleged ISIS threat to torch the landmark Taipei 101 skyscraper, saying that possibility of such a terror attack in Taiwan is "very low." Every terrorist attack requires local partners, which does not seem feasible in Taiwan since "it is unlikely that ISIS has sympathizers here," Lin said, who sits on the legislative Foreign and National Defense Committee. Without such assistance, "it might even take (ISIS) some time to find Taipei 101," according to Lin. While many countries might be targeted by ISIS, Taiwan is not the list, Lin said. Taiwan's government said the previous day that it had activated an emergency liaison mechanism after an apparent terror threat against Taipei was posted on Twitter, allegedly by ISIS. "When Islamic State attacks your cities it won't look nice. By the permission of Allah that day is not far," read the post, which was accompanied by a photo showing the iconic Taipei 101 skyscraper on fire. The message and photo were posted Feb. 24 on Twitter with the hashtag FreeShamiWitness@KhilafahTimes. The Republic of China (Taiwan) condemns all sorts of violence, said government spokesman Sun Lih-chyun (???), adding that the country has stepped up its emergency preparedness amid an increasing threat of global terrorism. Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (???) also assured the public of the government's emergency readiness, saying that Taipei is well-prepared and noting that "there are many hospitals here."
