APEC forms taskforce to push for free trade area in Asia-Pacific

Taipei, Feb. 26 (CNA) Members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum formed a taskforce during a meeting earlier this month to push for the proposed Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP), a Taiwanese official who attended the meeting in the Philippines said Thursday. The taskforce was formed during APEC's First Senior Officials' Meeting of 2015 in Clark that took place Feb. 6-7, said Tom Chou (???), director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of International Organizations, at a news briefing. Taiwan is one of the members of the taskforce, said Chou, who led the Taiwanese delegation at the meeting. "This is very important for Taiwan, as we will be able to gain first-hand information on the latest developments of the proposed trade bloc and be part of the regional economic integration," he said. Taiwan will continue to work with other APEC members in pushing for the trade agreement, Chou said. During the two-day meeting, Taiwan also made proposals on topics such as helping small and medium-sized enterprises better respond to disasters, promoting cooperation between the public and private sectors in minimizing agricultural losses and improving women's participation in the economy, he said. The proposals were welcomed by other APEC members, he said, adding that the Foreign Ministry will continue to cooperate with relevant Taiwanese government agencies to make contributions in those areas. The Second Senior Officials' Meeting is scheduled to be held in May in Boracay, also in the Philippines. (By Elaine Hou)
