Egyptian court clears Mubarak-era officials of corruption

CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's official news agency is reporting that a Cairo court has acquitted deposed President Hosni Mubarak's prime minister and interior minister in a corruption case.

The MENA news agency says the Cairo Criminal Court made the ruling Tuesday in the retrial of former Premier Ahmed Nazif and former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly, both of whom served in Mubarak's last Cabinet. The men faced charges of squandering public money.

The case stems from allegations they collaborated in awarding a German firm a contract to import license plates by direct order.

Over the past months, many Mubarak-era officials have won a series of acquittals, mostly in corruption-related cases. Meanwhile, courts are packed with cases involving Mubarak's successor, ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, and members of his outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.
