President Ma meets ex-VP; rejects 'lame duck' label

Taipei, Feb. 19 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (???) met former Vice President Lien Chan (??) Thursday, saying that Lien fully backs his recent refusal to be a "lame duck" president or lead a "caretaker government." "The meeting was conducted in an amicable atmosphere and Lien shared the same view with me that there is no 'lame duck' president or 'caretaker administration' issue," Ma told reporters waiting outside Lien's residence after the 40-minute meeting on the first day of the Year of the Goat on lunar calender.
"Things that should be done must get done and we shared the same view on this point," Ma said.
In an interview with UDN TV, a video channel of the United Daily News, last week, Ma said he has many things he still hopes to accomplish in his remaining 15 months in office and does not feel like he is a "lame duck" president or presiding over a "caretaker administration." The interview came amid reports that the Ma administration was in disarray after the ruling Kuomintang's crushing defeat in November's local elections.
For his part, Lien said he told Ma that the coming year is full of opportunities and that "we must work together and strive for a more prosperous, safe and successful soceity." "The current economic situation is not bad and the country's prospects are bright," he said, urging every member of the public to work hand in hand for the progress of the country.
