Taiwan ranks 9th in global hotel WiFi rankings

Brussels, Feb. 19 (CNA) Taiwan ranks ninth in the world for quality of hotel WiFi and the prevalence of free in-room WiFi at hotels, according to Hotel WiFi Test Inc., an online service that collects, analyzes and distributes hotel WiFi data from around the world. Just over three-quarters (75.7 percent) of Taiwan's hotels were rated as having adequate WiFi and 85 percent of them offer free in-room WiFi, according to a Jan. 20 Hotel WiFi Test report. South Korea was the leader in hotel WiFi quality (92 percent) by 7.1 percentage points over second-place Japan (84.9 percent) in the service's rankings of 50 countries and areas in North America, Europe and Asia. Ukraine had the world's third best hotel WiFi quality, followed by Switzerland, Romania, Hong Kong, Sweden, Norway, Taiwan and Hungary, according to Hotel WiFi Test. Hotels judged as having adequate WiFi had to provide an expected download speed of at least 3 Mbps (the Netflix recommendation for SD-quality streaming) and an upload speed of 500 kbps (the Skype recommendation for high-quality non-HD video calling). The free WiFi percentage was calculated as the percentage of hotels that offer free in-room WiFi among all hotels for which the WiFi price structure and availability is known. The report said that hotels in Europe were 33 percent more likely to have adequate WiFi than hotels in the United States, but American hotels were 14 percent more likely to offer free WiFi than European hotels. Asia ranked higher than Europe or the U.S. for hotel WiFi quality (49.5%), but had the lowest percentage of hotels offering free in-room WiFi (61.2 percent) among the three areas, the report said.
