Gov't aiming to let people live in safety and happiness: president

Taipei, Feb. 19 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said late Wednesday that the government will continue to improve its governance to let the people live in safety and happiness.
Although Taiwan's economy is picking up and the overall situation has improved, the government is poised to overcome the many challenges lying ahead, Ma said while on a visit to Dharma Drum Mountain in New Taipei around midnight on the Lunar New Year's Eve.
Looking back at the past year, Ma lamented Taiwan suffered several serious disasters caused by human errors. But he said he has prayed a right and prosperous new year for the country as auspicious signs have emerged.
While there were more newborns in Taiwan last year -- 210,383 -- which is the second highest level in 10 years, foreign tourist arrivals hit a record high at 9.91 million, which the president said are signs that the country's competiveness is strengthening.
At the same time, the local stock market closed at a 15-year high of 9,529, meaning that each of 9.44 million investors earned an average NT$360,000 (US$11,400) in 2014, he said, adding that a booming bourse will further stimulate the economy and boost consumption.
While Taiwan's economy is growing at a faster pace than that in Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea, the country's jobless rate has also dropped to a seven-year low and the household income inequality to a five-year low, he continued.
On the front of social order, Ma called 2014 a good year as Taiwan's criminal rate fell to a 20-year low.
Despite the above-mentioned improvements, he pointed out, however, some challenges concerning food safety and the aftermath of Kaohsiung's gas explosions and two major airplane crashes remain, requiring the government's utmost efforts to overcome them.
"This is my and the government's basic responsibility to take on these challenges. The government will make its all-out efforts to allow the people live in safety and happiness," the president said.
