Questioned Peru interior minister replaced

LIMA, Peru (AP) -- Peru's president has replaced as interior minister a former army general who is being investigated in the 1988 murder of a journalist.

Daniel Urresti was among five ministers replaced Tuesday night. The cabinet's most popular minister, the opposition nevertheless had demanded his ouster over his handling of a protest last week against the oil company Pluspetrol.

Police gunfire killed one person and wounded more than 30 in the clash. Urresti's office initially denied police responsibility.

In the latest Ipsos poll, Urresti had a 44 percent approval rating, twice that of President Ollanta Humala.

Urresti was Humala's sixth interior minister.

A prosecutor is expected to decide in July whether to formally charge him in the death of reporter Hugo Bustios, when Urresti was a local army intelligence chief.
