RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Fourth-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy advanced to the second round of the Rio Open by defeating Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 6-1, 7-6 (7) on Tuesday.
Fognini joins No. 3 Tommy Robredo of Spain, who advanced Monday.
Top-seeded Rafael Nadal and No. 2 David Ferrer played their first-round matches later Tuesday.
On the women's side of the combined ATP-WTA clay-court event, three unseeded players moved into the second round on Tuesday: Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil, Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay and Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States.
Top-seeded Sara Errani of Italy played later Tuesday. Second-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania advanced on Monday.
