Extra Kinmen flights rolled out to make up for fog cancellations

Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) The government has arranged for extra flights and ferries to carry people between the outlying Kinmen County and Taiwan proper to ease traffic ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday that begins Wednesday, a response to the cancellation of several commercial flights due to heavy fog in Kinmen. The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) asked local carriers to add 10 more flights to carry 1,243 passengers from Taipei in northern Taiwan to Kinmen and from Kinmen to Taichung in central Taiwan Monday after the only airport in the outlying county opened to traffic at 8:00 p.m., said CAA Director-General Lin Tyh-ming (???). Kinmen Airport was not open before then due to the heavy fog. In addition, the CAA helped arrange for two ferries from Taichung to Kinmen to carry 452 travelers. On Tuesday, the CAA had airlines send 12 extra flights from Taipei to Kinmen, from Taichung to Kinmen and from Kinmen to Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan, serving an estimated 1,684 passengers. Lin noted that the military on Tuesday also dispatched 14 transport aircraft to help people stranded in Kinmen by the fog. (By Angela Tsai and Scully Hsiao)
