35 Chinese tourists injured as buses collide

35 tourists from China were injured in a collision between two buses near the scenic area of Maobitou Tuesday afternoon. 34 of those injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment while one whose injuries were more serious and appeared to be hemorrhaging was sent to Nanmen Hospital in Hengchun.

Preliminary reports said that the collision occurred when one of the two buses, which were carrying a total of 43 passengers traveling in the same group, attempted to overtake the other on a stretch of highway marked with a double yellow line.

The bus accident comes less than two weeks after the February 4 crash of a TransAsia Airways ATR-72 which left 43 dead. That flight included two groups of Chinese tourists who had just finished a visit to Taiwan and were headed back to China via the offshore island of Kinmen.

Kenting in southern Taiwan is a favorite spot for sightseeing groups, notching a record 8.37 million visitors in 2014. Maobitou is an essential part of the itinerary for most Chinese tourists, drawing 2.87 mainland visitors in 2014, up 70% from the previous year’s total of 1.69 million.
