New MAC chief sworn in

Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) Former Deputy Defense Minister Andrew Hsia (???) took over the reins of the Mainland Affairs Council from outgoing chief Wang Yu-chi (???) at a succession ceremony held Tuesday. Hsia lauded the achievements and breakthroughs in relations with China during his predecessor's time in office, citing in particular a series of high-level talks between Wang and his Chinese counterpart Zhang Zhijun (???), who heads China's Taiwan Affairs Office. Hsia said the talks represented the first time in 65 years that a delegation of government officials from Taiwan made an official visit to China. Wang's first meeting with Zhang in February 2014 showed the Republic of China (Taiwan) was alive and well, and it set a precedent that he found moving, Hsia said. Hsia also pledged to utilize his experience and knowledge gained from past stints in the defense and foreign affairs ministries in bringing new energy to strengthening cross-strait relations.
