MADISON, Alabama (AP) -- A spokesman says the Indian government is "extremely disturbed" by the treatment of a citizen who was roughed up by police in Alabama.
India's External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin says the government takes the incident very seriously.
The spokesman was responding to reporters' questions in New Dehli on Friday about the treatment of Sureshbhai Patel by officers in the city of Madison.
A Madison police officer was arrested and is being fired after Patel was slammed to the ground and injured while visiting relatives in the town.
Police stopped the man while he was walking in his son's neighborhood. Patel's attorney claims the man was accosted because of his dark brown skin.
Patel has filed a federal lawsuit claiming his civil rights were violated.
