Local characteristics key to success of Taiwan's animation: official

Taipei, Feb. 13 (CNA) Local animation companies should bring "elements of local innovation" into their productions to succeed abroad, the director-general of the Industrial Development Bureau advised Friday as his bureau released the latest data on Taiwan's digital content industry. "Animation is the core of digital content," said Director-General Wu Ming-ji (???), "but without elements of local innovation, the digital content industry will toil just for the benefit of foreign companies even if it generates high revenues" -- a reference to the tendency of Taiwanese animation studios to do work outsourced from companies abroad rather than their own original creations. Production value of the digital content industry in Taiwan grew to NT$858.2 billion (US$27.3 billion) in 2014 from NT$153.7 billion in 2002, when the government begin efforts to promote the sector's development, and last year over 100,000 people were working in the industry, Wu said. The animation sector alone generated a production value of NT$6.7 billion in 2014, up 15.3 percent from the previous year, while exports of the sector were NT$1.3 billion, he said. Animation has also helped trigger private investment worth NT$2.73 billion and driven the development of related products, creating output of NT$11.3 billion a year, the official added.
