Across Asia last week, there were bean-catching ceremonies, a flurry of business deals between China and Argentina and another aviation tragedy.

Pilgrims in Malaysia got doused with water as part of cleaning ritual during a festival honoring the Hindu god Lord Murugan, while Japanese tried to catch lucky beans flung by celebrities in a traditional ceremony thought to bring good luck and drive away evil.

In Bangladesh, people struggled to cope with a strike and a transportation blockade called by opposition political parties to try to pressure Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and announce new elections.

Thousands of Muslims thronged a shrine to a Sufi saint in disputed Kashmir while China welcomed Argentinian President Christina Fernandez, who wound up her visit with a string of business and investment deals.

In Taiwan, a TransAsia Airways propeller-jet with 58 people on board crashed into a river shortly after takeoff. Fifteen people survived. It was the latest in a series of disasters to befall regional airlines over the past year.
