Bail for Ting Hsin boss again in limbo

Bail for Ting Hsin boss again in limbo

Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) The Taiwan High Court on Monday ordered a district court in Changhua County to reconsider its decision to grant bail to Wei Ying-chung (???), who resigned last fall as chairman of Ting Hsin Oil and Fat Industrial Co. (??????) amid a food safety scandal. The Taichung Branch of the Taiwan High Court ruled in favor of prosecutors, who want to keep Wei in detention, and the Changhua District Court will now have to hold another bail hearing, possibly by Tuesday. It was the second time in week that the high court has asked the district court to reconsider its ruling. The first time came on Feb. 2 after the lower court ordered Wei to be released on NT$100 million (US$3.17 million) bail on Jan. 28. On Feb. 3, the lower court maintained its bail decision but increased the amount to NT$300 million, prompting prosecutors to file another appeal. Wei was indicted in late October 2014 on multiple counts of fraud and violations of food safety laws after Ting Hsin Oil and Fat was found to have sold edible oils that contained ingredients not fit for human consumption. He was detained for nearly three months before being released on bail in late January. (By Lian Jen-kai and Jay Chen)
