Charity sets 2015 funding goal to help facially disfigured people

Taipei, Feb. 8 (CNA) The Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation has set a fundraising goal of NT$28.5 million (US$0.9 million) this year to help burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement who are suffering from financial woes, the Taipei-based charity said Sunday. The foundation said it hoped to help 1,450 affected families this year, which will require NT$28.5 million (US$0.9 million) to provide the necessary home rehabilitation services, financial subsidies, job training, and job opportunities. Founded in 1981, the foundation is devoted to helping burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement with their physical, psychological and social rehabilitation. In 2014, the organization served 1,398 families, more than half of which suffered financial hardship after their main income earners lost their job to diseases or injuries that caused facial disfigurement. Around 70 percent of people with disease- or injury-related facial disfigurement can't find a job because of their appearance, the foundation said. (By Lung Pei-ning and Elizabeth Hsu)
