No discussions yet on compensation: TransAsia

Taipei, Feb. 8 (CNA) No compensation figures were mentioned at a meeting Sunday with families and relatives of the victims of the deadly Feb. 4 TransAsia Airways (????) plane crash, according to a TransAsia spokesman. Compensation figures for the dead will not be discussed until Feb. 11, after memorial ceremonies are held for them, Liu Chung-chi (???) said at a press conference after the meeting. When asked if the figure will be higher than the NT$14.9 million (US$470,625) paid to the family members of those killed in another TransAsia crash last year, Liu said numbers had not been discussed but that TransAsia will "do our best" to ensure the best compensation possible. He said all of the deceased victims of the plane crash will be offered the same amount of compensation regardless of nationality. Among the 53 passengers on the ill-fated plane, 31 were Chinese nationals on holiday and the other 22 were Taiwanese nationals. One flight attendant and 14 passengers survived. Those injured in the crash, as well as family members of those killed, will be able to receive an additional NT$200,000 as a consolation payment, Liu said. The carrier will negotiate compensation terms individually with the driver and passenger in the taxi that was hit by the plane as it careened to the ground, he said. The families and relatives of 24 crash victims and Chinese tourism officials attended the meeting with TransAsia officials on Sunday. The family members of Kinmen resident Yang Jung-tien (???) pleaded for search teams to continue to search for Yang, according to Huang Hsiu-chen (???), a secretary with the Kinmen County government who was present at the meeting. Yang and Chinese nationals Zhang Xiaobin (???) and Chen Rentai (???), all males, are still unaccounted for. Huang said TransAsia agreed at the meeting to give families of the deceased a funeral subsidy of NT$1.2 million each. Memorial ceremonies for the dead will be held on Monday and Tuesday. A compensation coordination meeting will be held on Feb. 11. The search for the three missing passengers continued Sunday. (By Angela Tsai and Christie Chen)
