MediaTek January sales up 2.28% on month

Taipei, Feb. 6 (CNA) MediaTek Inc. (???), one of Taiwan's leading integrated circuit designers, said its sales for January rose 2.28 percent from a month earlier, defying the conventional wisdom that the first quarter is a slow season for chipmakers. MediaTek was likely bolstered by clients moving to build up inventories to meet strong demand for high-tech devices during the Lunar New Year holiday. Strong demand from China has also been boosting shipments of the company's smartphone chips, its major sales source. In a statement, the IC designer said it saw NT$17.464 billion (US$554 million) in consolidated sales in January, up from NT$17.075 billion recorded a month earlier. The January figure represented a 35.97 percent year-on-year increase and a new high for the month. The increase does not necessarily mean that MediaTek has trumped slow season effects this quarter. But the unusual January success came as the company continues to push into the promising 4G smartphone chip market, and market analysts predict the IC designer will see no more than a 5 percent sequential drop in the current quarter. Analysts said that MediaTek has grasped only a 20 percent share of China's 4G smartphone chip market, indicating room for the IC designer to expand its presence. MediaTek said its 4G smartphone chip shipments could top 100 million units in 2015, up from an estimate of 30 million units for 2014. In spite of the promising outlook, shares of MediaTek lost 1.24 percent to close at NT$479.00 on the Taiwan Stock Exchange Friday as the bellwether electronics sector faced downward pressure, led by smartphone camera lens supplier Largan Precision Co. (???), the most expensive stock in the local bourse.
Largan's 30 percent month-on-month drop in sales for January hurt market sentiment for the entire high tech sector, dealers said. (By Jackson Chang and Frances Huang)
