U.S., Canada express condolences over deadly plane crash in Taipei

Taipei, Feb. 5 (CNA) The United States and Canada have conveyed condolences to the families of those who died in Taipei Wednesday when a TransAsia Airways (????) flight crashed into a river with 58 people on board. In a statement Thursday, American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Christopher Marut offered "profound condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the passengers and families affected by the tragic loss of flight GE235 on Feb. 4 in Taipei." Marut also commended the emergency personnel who were still at the scene of the crash, according to the statement issued by the AIT, which represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of bilateral diplomatic ties. Meanwhile, the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei extended "its deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the plane crash in Taipei" in a statement posted on its website Thursday. The office represents Canada's interests in Taiwan in the absence of bilateral diplomatic ties. A day earlier, Pope Francis conveyed his condolences to the families of those who died in the crash, saying he was saddened by the news. Messages of condolence have also come from France, the United Kingdom and the European Union. The French Office in Taipei, which represents France's interests in Taiwan in the absence of bilateral diplomatic ties, issued a statement of condolence on its website. In a similar vein, the British Trade and Cultural Office said it was "deeply saddened to learn of the TransAsia plane crash." In a Facebook post, the European Economic and Trade Office in Taiwan expressed sympathy to the families of the victims of the crash on behalf of the European Union. The death toll from the TransAsia Airways plane that crashed into the Keelung River in Taipei had increased to 32 as of Thursday morning, as the search for 11 others on board the flight continued in cold and rainy weather.
