Acer eying increased growth momentum in 2016

Taipei, Feb. 4 (CNA) Acer Inc. (??) said Wednesday it is poised to speed up its growth momentum and expand its business scale in 2016 following its successful efforts to return to profitability. The Taiwanese PC maker has expanded from hardware manufacturing into several new businesses with a profitable outlook, which will pave the way for faster growth of the company in the long term, said Acer founder and Honorary Chairman Stan Shih (???). "I hope we can gain momentum and expand our business scale starting from 2016," Shih told reporters on the sidelines of Acer's year-end party for its employees. "In 2015, we expect to find the right direction for our business and then speed up the momentum in 2016," the 70-year-old industry veteran said. Acer, whose 2014 revenue declined to an eight-year low of NT$329.84 billion (US$10.49 billion), has been moving beyond hardware manufacturing into software and services as the PC industry remains stagnated. In a management reshuffle, Acer named Jason Chen as its new CEO and president in January 2014, which helped the company to emerge from three consecutive years of operating losses. Under a new strategy called Build Your Own Cloud, Acer is planning to increase the gross revenue of its cloud application business in 2015 by acquiring more corporate customers and increasing the payout rate for individual users. The New Taipei-based company said it has seen the number of individual users of its free cloud services jump from 5 million last year to 6 million as of Jan. 21 this year, and the figure is estimated to reach 10 million in the first half of the year.
