DPP, KMT suspend by-election campaigns after air disaster

Taipei, Feb. 4 (CNA) Taiwan's two major political parties on Wednesday announced that they will suspend their campaigns for legislative by-elections out of respect for the victims of a TransAsia passenger plane crash in Taipei earlier in the day. The ruling Kuomintang (KMT,???) said campaign events that were scheduled Thursday for its chairman, vice chairmen and secretary-general will be canceled. Tsai Ing-wen (???), chairperson of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, ???), also asked DPP candidates to suspend their campaigns for the elections, which is scheduled for Saturday. An ATR-72 turbo-prop plane belonging to TransAsia Airways (????) crashed into the Keelung River in Taipei's Nangang District just about one minute after taking off from Taipei Songshan Airport at 10:52 a.m. Wednesday, clipping an elevated expressway in the process. Flight GE-235 was carrying 53 passengers and five crew members, en route from Taipei to the outlying island county of Kinmen. As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, 25 people had been confirmed dead.
