Heavy freeway traffic expected during Lunar New Year holiday

Taipei, Feb. 3 (CNA) The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said on Tuesday that freeway traffic will be heavy during the six-day Lunar New Year holiday that begins on Feb. 18. Transportation Minister Chen Jian-yu predicted that travel time between Taipei and Kaohsiung will be six hours during the holiday, about two hours longer than normal, and that traffic will be especially heavy on Feb. 21 and Feb. 22, with up to 3.3 million vehicles traveling on national freeways each day. That compared with just under 3 million vehicles on the freeways on the busiest day during last year's Lunar New Year holiday period. Chen urged people to travel at night when tolls are not collected to help dissipate the traffic flows. The toll-free period will run from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. on all freeways, and will extend to 8 a.m. on northbound lanes of the No. 5 Freeway, according to the MOTC. (By Wang Shu-fen and Y.F. Low)
