US Court nixes hearing on James Brown widow's diary

AIKEN, South Carolina (AP) -- The South Carolina Supreme Court has canceled a lower court's hearing in which a freelance journalist covering the fight over the estate of soul singer James Brown might have been forced to reveal her sources.

The justices nixed the Circuit Court hearing less than 30 minutes before it was set to start Monday. They ruled that only the Supreme Court can decide whether the request that reporter Sue Summer give up her cellphone and notes is legal.

An attorney for Brown's widow wants to know who sent Summer the widow's diary that has been under seal.

Summer was anonymously sent the diary last week and published it on her Facebook page.

The fight over James Brown's estate is in its ninth year as a judge tries to arrange mediation.
