TSMC's 12-inch wafer capacity ranks 5th in world

Taipei, Jan. 31 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC, ???) is now ranked fifth worldwide for 12-inch wafer production capacity, according market information advisory firm IC Insights. In a research report, IC Insights said that TSMC, the world's largest pure foundry operator, had a 12-inch wafer capacity of 430,000 units a month as of the end of December 2014, accounting for 10.3 percent of the global total. The report said that United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC, ??), the second largest pure foundry operator in Taiwan, had a monthly capacity of 110,000 units, representing 2.6 percent of the global total and putting it in eighth place. The world's largest 12-inch wafer supplier was Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea with a monthly capacity of 985,000 units, making up 23.5 percent of the total. U.S.-based Micron Technology Inc. came in second with 627,000 units per month, or 15.0 percent of the global total, followed by Japan's Toshiba Corp. with a monthly capacity of 525,000 units and South Korea's SK Hynix Inc. with a monthly capacity of 470,000 units. After TSMC, Intel Corp. of the U.S. took sixth place with a monthly capacity of 350,000 units, with U.S.-based GlobalFoundries Inc. coming in seventh with a monthly capacity of 193,000 units. No. 9 was Taiwan's Powerchip Technology Corp. (??) with a capacity of 90,000 units a month, while Texas Instruments Inc. of the U.S. tied with Taiwan's Nanya Technology Corp. (????) for 10th with a monthly capacity of 61,000 each. IC Insights said the major memory chip makers -- Samsung, Micron, Toshiba and Hynix -- made up 62 percent of the 12-inch wafer capacity in the world, while the major pure foundry operators -- TSMC, UMC and GlobalFoundries -- took about 18 percent of the total.
