127 passengers to get free flights on Vietjet

Taipei, Jan. 31 (CNA) Budget carrier VietJet Air said Saturday it will offer free trips to 127 passengers from Taipei (Taoyuan International) to Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate a new air link it said would enhance cultural exchanges. The special flight nicknamed "Spread the Love" will be launched March 20, the Vietnamese airline said. Passengers on the free flight can enjoy half-priced return tickets. The 127 lucky travelers were selected from an online campaign in which VietJet asked participants to submit their stories about Vietnam. One of the winners is Kim Cuc, a Vietnamese woman who settled down in Taiwan with her local husband. She said her son will take the flight to visit his grandparents in Vietnam, a longtime dream for the family that has been put off for some time due to financial restraints. The budget carrier currently operates five round-trip flights per week between the two destinations and is likely to increase that number to seven starting this summer, it said. The airline is also planning to open new routes from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to Taichung, in central Taiwan, and Kaohsiung, in southern Taiwan. VietJet has carried 10 million passengers as of mid-January since starting operations at the end of 2011, and it expects accumulated passenger volume to reach 20 million by the end of 2015. It is one of 16 low-cost carriers now operating in Taiwan. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
